When I speak with colleagues across the financial services industry, one theme comes up again and again: the pace of change in money transfer services — in Qatar, across the Gulf, and worldwide — has never been faster. What took days a decade ago now takes minutes. What required a branch visit can now happen from a phone. And yet, the fundamentals of our industry remain exactly the same — people want to move their money safely, quickly, and affordably.
Over the coming years, I believe three trends will define where money transfers go next.
Speed will become invisible
Customers no longer compare us to other exchange houses — they compare us to every digital experience in their lives. When a message arrives instantly, people expect their money to move the same way. The industry is responding, and real-time transfers are quickly becoming the standard rather than the exception. Soon, speed will not be a selling point at all. It will simply be assumed, the way we assume electricity works when we flip a switch.
Transparency will win customers
The days of hidden margins and unclear fees are ending. Customers today are informed, connected, and quick to compare. The institutions that thrive will be the ones that show their pricing openly and explain exactly what the recipient will receive before the sender commits. In my experience, transparency is not a cost — it is the single best marketing investment a financial brand can make.
Personal service will matter more, not less
This may sound surprising in a digital age. But as routine transactions move to apps and kiosks, the moments when a customer chooses to visit a branch or call a person become more meaningful. Those are the moments of complexity, of uncertainty, of important life events. Technology handles the routine; people handle what matters. Institutions that invest in both will serve customers best.
What excites me most is that these trends all point in the same direction: a better experience for the customer. Faster transfers mean families receive support sooner. Transparent pricing means senders keep more of what they earn. And thoughtful service means no one faces a financial decision alone.
The future of our industry is not about choosing between technology and people. It is about combining them so well that the customer never has to think about either — they simply get their money where it needs to go, every single time.
